About Us
GOTR Annapolis is a chapter of Girls on the Run International, established in 1996 by Molly Barker, a marathon runner and Ironman triathlete. Today, there are over 140 chapters across the U.S. & Canada, with several new locations added yearly. In 2006 40,000 girls were served in the U.S. & Canada. The Girls on the Run Annapolis chapter was approved in the spring of 2005. GOTRA initially had 1 location with 2 classes totaling 20 girls. In the spring of 2008 we will have 9 sites with a total of 13 classes and 195 girls. We are able to grow and establish new sites anywhere in Anne Arundel County as the volunteer base to support them comes forward.

Please let us know if you are interested in getting involved.

GOTR Annapolis is a not-for-profit organization that exists solely by program fees, and individual and corporate donations and grants.

COUNCIL DIRECTOR

Beth Howell is the council director and brought GOTR to Annapolis in 2005. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the Medical College of Virginia with continued studies in critical care trauma nursing and understanding adolescents.   She loves working out, sailing and cycling. Beth feels strongly about living and teaching healthy life style choices and that each girl (and boy!) should believe in themselves and their own individual strengths.

BOARD MEMBERS

Pam Eling has a Master’s degree in Nursing from Duke University.  She began her involvement in Girls on the Run as an assistant coach at Windsor Farm Elementary School in the fall of 2006, and joined the Annapolis area Board of Directors in December 2006.  She discovered her love of running and its confidence building ability in her 30’s and enthusiastically wants to share all the benefits of a positive, healthy lifestyle.  She is currently coaching at Arnold Elementary.  Pam is the mother of a daughter and son, and has completed many road races, including the New York Marathon, and just finished her first adventure race.  One of the most exciting parts of the program for her is to watch each and every girl come across the finish line with a huge smile of confidence on their face.

Angela Edwards first became involved in GOTR as an assistant coach and now serves as a head coach and member of the Board of Directors. She is a former career firefighter/paramedic and currently is on the faculty at the University of Maryland College Park where she coordinates the paramedic education program.  She is also completing her PhD in Exercise Physiology at the University of Maryland.  Angie is a personal trainer and avid runner and loves sharing her passion for health and fitness with the girls.

Bess Freedlander graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in International Relations.  She began her involvement in Girls on the Run as an assistant coach in Northern Virginia in 2003, has served as an assistant coach in Annapolis at Bates Middle school for the last two years and just recently joined the Board of Directors.  Bess has been a runner since she was 10 years old and has been active in sports all of her life.  She feels strongly that all girls and young women should have the opportunity to participate in sports and be given the chance to build confidence, learn team building skills and develop a healthy body image.  Bess believes that Girls on the Run gives girls this opportunity and provides a nurturing and supportive environment in which all girls can learn and thrive.

Christina Hicks has a Master’s degree in Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University and Bachelor’s degree in International Studies and German with a Political Science minor from Towson State University.  Before working for a family company, she worked in higher education and the high tech industry.  She started volunteering in 2006 as an assistant coach and brings her two young daughters with her to the sessions.  Not only does she enjoy seeing the positive impact the program has on the young girls, but also her own daughters.  Christina also competes in many running races throughout the year and recently completed her first adventure race.

Laura Kellman received a BS in Resources Management from the SUNY College of Environment Science and Forestry.  She worked with the US Forest Service for a number of years throughout the northeast.  She has one daughter and after learning about the program, Laura was sold on Girls on the Run and wanted to help make it a success in Annapolis.  She joined the board in 2005.
